Mikao Usui was the originator of what we today call Reiki. He was born on August 15th, 1865 in the village of 'Taniai-mura' in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture Kyoto. During his life, Miako Usui held many different professions, and at some point in his life, he became a Tendai Buddhist Monk/Priest. On several occasions, he took a form of meditation lasting 21 days. This is where, it is said, that he was given the inspiration for his system of healing - Reiki. This Japanese concept translated as "Universal Life Energy" by Hawayo Takata. The phrase was used by Mikao Usui to describe an energy that he had contacted through years of self-preparation.
The Japanese characters he selected reflects the understanding of the occult and mystic aspects of our natural world. The following description of Reiki comes from Hawayo Takata from her early days of being Chujiro Hayashi's student. "The power is unfathomable, immeasurable, and being a universal life force, it is incomprehensible to man."
The word Reiki is also used to describe what is now a general practice of energy work expressed originally through the action of "laying on of hands." Mikao Usui, not only became known for his gift of healing but also had the gift of passing on this ability to channel the Reiki Energy to others. This treatment is a safe, natural method for self-improvement and spiritual healing that everyone can incorporate into their life. It can lead you towards a deeper, more meaningful existence. As an energy force, it is a tool for healing and can also be used as a catalyst for change. Reiki works on the principle that all of the body and its organs have their own energy field which is constantly changing. The conditions of disease are rooted within this energy field and if the energy force is low or blocked, this can cause sickness.
Reiki aims to unblock or free this ‘life force’ so that we’re able to feel healthy on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. In a similar way to meditation, it can help us to re-balance from the negative emotions of worry, fear, doubt, anger, and anxiety. During a healing session, the Reiki practitioner will ask you to lie down or be in a seated position – whichever you find more comfortable., and will then transmit the energy through the laying on of hands which will usually begin at the patient’s head and end at the feet, gradually work down the body. The
effects are very individual, from a sense of relaxation, peace or of a tingling effect.
The practitioner’s hands may feel extremely cold or hot depending on the comfort of the patient.
Reiki can benefit in a number of ways, including:
- Reducing stress and helping with relaxation
- Relieving pain and treating the symptom and cause of illness
- Promoting self-healing
- Boosting the immune system
- Reducing blood pressure
- Toxin removal
